16:9 Aspect Ratio

A 16:9 frame is 16 units wide for every 9 units high. Exact sizes include 1280 x 720, 1920 x 1080, and 3840 x 2160 pixels. The ratio describes a widescreen shape rather than one fixed resolution, so every proportional multiple uses the same 16:9 frame.

What 16:9 means

Sixteen width units correspond to nine height units, giving a decimal width-to-height value of about 1.7778. Multiply width by 9/16 to calculate height, or multiply height by 16/9 to calculate width.

How it compares

A 16:9 frame is wider than 3:2 and 4:3. At equal height it provides more horizontal space, while converting a narrower source requires either cropping the top and bottom or leaving space at the sides.

Common uses

  • Widescreen video, presentations, and display-ready graphics.
  • Landscape images and interface previews that need a wide frame.

Fit, Crop, and Pad

Fit
Keep all content
Crop
Fill the frame
Pad
Add background

When a 4:3 image is placed inside a 16:9 frame, Fit keeps the complete image and leaves space on the left and right. Crop fills the wider frame by removing content from the top and bottom. Pad preserves the source and fills the side space with a background.

Formula

Calculate the missing side

height = width × 9 / 16
width = height × 16 / 9

For a 1920 px width, height = 1920 x 9 / 16 = 1080 px. For a 720 px height, width = 720 x 16 / 9 = 1280 px.

Frequently asked questions

What resolution is 16:9?

16:9 is a proportion rather than one resolution. Exact examples include 1280 x 720, 1920 x 1080, 2560 x 1440, and 3840 x 2160 pixels.

Is 1920 x 1080 a 16:9 aspect ratio?

Yes. Dividing both dimensions by 120 reduces 1920 x 1080 to 16:9.

How do I convert 4:3 content to 16:9?

Use Crop to fill the wider frame by trimming the top and bottom, or use Fit or Pad to preserve the complete source and leave space at the sides.
