1:1 Aspect Ratio

A 1:1 image is a square, so width and height are equal. Common sizes include 512 x 512, 1080 x 1080, and 2000 x 2000 pixels. It works best when the main subject can sit near the center, as with avatars, product photos, and thumbnails.

What 1:1 means

One width unit equals one height unit, so the decimal ratio is exactly 1. The matching dimension never changes: a 900 px width requires a 900 px height.

How it compares

A square has no long side. Compared with landscape ratios it adds height, and compared with portrait ratios it adds width.

Cropping a landscape photo to 1:1 removes content from the left and right when centered. Fit keeps the whole photo but leaves space above and below. Pad fills that space with a chosen background.

For a 1080 px width, height = 1080 x 1 / 1 = 1080 px. A 2048 px height likewise requires a 2048 px width.

What dimensions are a 1:1 ratio?

Does a larger square change the ratio?

No. Pixel count and image quality increase, but equal width and height always simplify to 1:1.

How can I make a photo square without stretching it?

Crop the longer axis or fit the whole image with padding. Do not independently force width and height to equal values.
